Western Cup XL

Registration for the Western Cup XL badminton tournament is now open until 22 March! Spots for 16 people or eight teams are remaining!

With the support of Team Edmonton, we are proud to announce and present the return of  badminton tournament at Western Cup in well over a decade!

Competitions will be held on Saturday, 30 March 2024 over the Easter long weekend at the 40th edition of Western Cup. We are proud to be part of the milestone celebration of the longest running LGBTQ+ multi-sport festival in North America.

We are working on an alternative venue for Mar 26. We’ll keep you posted if anything changes. Otherwise we play at Father Lacombe at 8pm.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Volunteer is needed on May 21 to host the badminton session. This comes with complimentary drop-in that day as a small token of appreciation. Let James know in person if you are able to help.

One to two volunteers are needed during the Western Cup tournament on March 30. Whether or not you are registered in the tournament, you can fulfill various tasks here and there. Email us if you are able to help. Example of tasks:

• Venue set up
• Floor sweep
• Signage
• Equipment (birdies)
• Score keeping / line person
• (Door person)

Apollo Badminton is proud to host one of only two badminton discovery sessions, and the only one for adults, during Sport Calgary‘s All Sport One City event this February.

As a proud member of Sport Calgary, we are delighted to promote the sport of badminton as one of the most popular and the fastest racket sport on the planet in an LGBTQ+ safe space.

On February 13, one court (the one farthest away from the stage) will be reserved for instructional session for All Sport One City registrants between 7-8pm. You are welcomed to invite friends to reserve a spot on the Sport Calgary website. The session is designed for individuals who have never played the sport. The limited space is open to the general public and it is first come first served. Participation is free, and all equipment is provided for the instructional session.

Competitions will be held on Saturday, 30 March 2024 over the Easter long weekend at the 40th edition of Western Cup. We are proud to be part of the milestone celebration of the longest running LGBTQ+ multi-sport festival in North America.

For the experimental relaunch of the badminton tournament, we will be featuring doubles competition only.  We will be capping to 24 pair teams (48 participants), opened to any gender combination,  any adult, and any level. We invite badminton players from Calgary, Edmonton, and beyond our province.

• Each team member will register individually;
• If you name a partner during registration you’ll enter the tournament as a team, and keep your partner throughout the whole tournament;
• Individual player without a partner will be assigned different partners during preliminary placement round; and paired with a partner in the elimination round based on points accumulated;
• There will be opportunity to gain bonus points and/or prizes during the optional round of fun games;
• Single elimination round for medals in at most 3 pools based on accumulated points.

Beyond the badminton tournament, the Western Cup festival features a long weekend full of events from Thursday to Sunday. Head to the Western Cup website to learn more.

We will not be able to process cash and Square tap payment on November 28. We encourage you to pay for drop-in, rental, and/or pass purchase through our online store ahead of time. Just let Lise know that you have done so, and we’ll be able confirm after December 5 and issue you a physical pass if applicable. Otherwise if you already have a prepaid pass Lise will be able to check you off as usual. We thank Lise who will be hosting on November 28!

It has been more than a dozen of years since there was a badminton tournament at Western Cup. Over the Easter long weekend in 2024, our friends at Western Cup will be celebrating their 40th edition of the longest running LGBTQ+ multi-sport event in North America.

We can make this an even grander celebration by bringing back the badminton tournament to the sport festival! We are working with our friends at Team Edmonton to help make this a reality. But first, we would like to hear from you. So please complete this quick survey by October 31 to help us gauge interest within our community and shape this into a tournament you want.
